Yes, he deserved to be shot. There is no excuse for killing such a beautiful animal as an elephant.
I remember going to Tatton Hall when my children were young and there was an animal head mounted on the wall. The children were horrified and I couldn't give a good explanation.
Strangely my youngest daughter got married there years later.

I said in another thread it would have been justice if his body had been dragged away by a lion. This monster even murdered gentle giraffes which have slowly become more endangered than elephants. May he rot in hell.

I don't mourn his passing for sure but South Africa is well known for criminality more than animal rights. Was it his trophy slaughter brought about his demise or something else?
He was killed by robbers I read, so they probably didn't know about his notoriety as an animal killer.

The only thing that the attackers took was his pistol, it's reported that none of his other very expensive belongings were taken.
To me it doesn't matter why he was killed.
I completely agree. Sometimes the punishment fits the crime, why should murder be somehow secondary because of what mankind, (a ridiculous oximoron) deem to be sentient.
We should put a prize of say a million dollars on all their heads 'dead or alive'!
