Title: Storms
Post by: Sheila on February 17, 2022, 02:10:28 PM
I see that Wirral Council are closing roads that go to the coast (New Brighton and West Kirby) and have issued warnings about not going to the woods.

One of my daughters is supposed to be flying from Manchester to Egypt tomorrow morning and she is a nervous passenger having been in a plane that made an emergency landing.

The Manchester City team had to be diverted to Liverpool airport on their way back from Portugal, winds were so bad.   Liverpool Airport on Twitter, posting: "Great to safely welcome Manchester City to the football capital of England this afternoon, after their flight was diverted from their home airport due to high winds."

   priceless.

Manchester airport flight departures will have all up to date info on line i imagine.

What an interesting tournament. Liverpool v Manchester. The four top Prem teams and four from the lower leagues for a round-robin competition of some kind. I'd watch it.

I saw a video of that flight trying to land at Manchester.  My daughter had a nightmare getting through to the departure lounge but it looks as though the flight is on time.  The storm has just started to hit the north west.

I already have a bit over 3" of snow - it started at 0600 and there is no sign of a let-up - I have agreed with my cleaning lady that she stays home and stays safe, ditto my masseuse who lives up in the hills

My daughter is in the air but it looks like a rather odd route, probably trying to avoid the storm.  I'll stop worrying about her now and start worrying about my grandchildren who are with their ........ of a dad!

This is already the heaviest snowfall we have had for at least two years, and there is clearly more to come. Three and a half hours so far and no sign of it letting up. I am already going to need wellies just to get to the garage freezers, but thankfully don't actually need to go there

When there is no snow they'll say it's global warming. Now it's an extreme weather event caused by global warming.

Damned bright sun again. It sets off the IR motion detector that says somebody is comint to the door. Third morning on the trot now. It's hell down south

Bugger. Thought I'd turned it off. Wrong switch. It went off again and I thought it was my burglar alarm.

Glad Sheila's daughter got off ok from Manchester.
Dageus is just sooooooooooo beautiful
Here the storm kicked off about 11am, then we had sleet, half an hour later the sun was shining, now we're back to horrendous winds and rain.  I hope my shed roof doesn't come off  :hmm:

What a damp squib that wind was here near Ashby de la Zouch.
I had my tin hat on, my house building insurance policy clutched in my hand, candles at the ready for long power cuts and mobile fully charged and it's all blown over without any winds
to speak of.

My youngest has nearly arrived in Egypt, the plane is at 6,000 feet and the temperature is 21C.

My eldest is in a flat near Brighton and close to the sea front.  She reckons the flat is moving!  She normally goes swimming in the sea most days but probably not today!

The only thing in our back garden we liked when we moved in last year was a corkscrew tree. It is bending into the fence and looks like it will be  part of our neighbour's garden by the end of the day.

The Somerset coast is taking a battering.

My son-in-law couldn't land at Gatwick from Portugal..
They were flown to Paris.. Later they will fly back to Portugal where a flight will be arranged to take them to Gatwick. !

He has just sent a text saying ' Aborted, scary landing at Gatwick..'

Earlier today a mobile toilet was blown down the road from a nearby building site.. I went outside and took some pics.. Within 15 mins it was gone..
I reckon it was nicked by someone who was 'desperate to go'..

Quite wet here and a bit windy but nothing to speak of. Feel sorry for older folk in the South.

Hope everyone stayed safe. We are getting off light with winds of 70mph. Apart from rescuing wheelie bins I am remaining indoors. Roxy had to make do with the back garden. The peak of the storm now moving on.

Our cat went out into the back garden, the wind caught his long fur and he turned and ran back in again!

Three men went wild swimming in The Mersey but the New Brighton coastguards made them come out of the water.  People have been warned to stay away from the coast and not to go to take photographs.

I think there's something to be said for letting people decide for themselves what's safe for them or not but of course that doesn't allow for idiots who risk the lives of others by pursuing their own thrills..

We wouldn't have been aware of any storms if it wasn't for watching the TV news.

We live in the Trent Valley area & the power stations create what's known as a reverse vortex whereby the circular cooling towers cause any strong winds to blow round them, reversing the direction of the wind so that it then blows it back into the path of the oncoming wind & cancels it out.

The effect is like being in the centre of a tornado where there isn't any wind.

Gave up on the idea of fishing today on the wind and rain forecasts. Been dry and calm since I got up but the bad stuff was forecast later.
