When buying a new appliance or  furniture their usually is a guarantee that the product will be replaced should a fault occur  within that period ,
of course many companies also add extra protection to your appliance by asking you to pay so much extra money for a further three years ,or so

mean while should that firm or company go into liquidation ( bust)  then what is the real worth of that promise obviously nothing ,
in recent times bed manufacturers are selling beds and mattresses in the same manner but  this time with a 15 year guarantee, very nice too,

so what is the real worth of any promise , is any thing , worth paying extra for , or would it be cheaper to save the difference and add extra money simply to replace the item some date in the future.

Q; what thoughts have you when it comes  to  guarantees ,

Michael Rolls

depends on the cost of the item and - for an extended warranty - how much
Usually don't bother

I never buy extended warranty... All these extra expenses build up.. most items are covered for two years anyway..
My household insurance covers my large electrical appliances ...
Don't ask me.. I know nuffink..

I don't either. Some are insurance based and might survive the retailer tanking though.

Alex

I never take on extended warranties either, it's so much cheaper to replace say a telly these days.

The 3 year ones are especially pointless. You can easily argue that something like a TV busting in 2 years makes it unfit for purpose so you are paying out a lot to add a year.

One of our Chromebooks suddenly stopped working last week after we had had it for one year and two weeks.  I found the paperwork and it was from John Lewis so had a two year guarantee.

I phoned up and they said to either take it into a shop or they would collect it.  I asked for it to be collected and was told they did not need the lead and we did not have to pack it up.

I've had an email to say it has reached the workshop so, fingers crossed, we will get it back soon.

That's what I call service

Alex

My telly is from John Lewis Sheila, great customer service, the guarantee at the time was for 5 years. It's way past that and still going strong......maybe I shouldn't temp fate ?  :lipsrsealed: :lipsrsealed: :lipsrsealed:

p.s. that's another shop that closed down in Chester last year.

Depends on whether you a) Get it back and b) It works.. Best not to count your chickens..

Sorry.. That reply was intended for Sheila..

I imagine she will. I haven't bought from JL as we don't have one and they don't spring to mind when I look but they do have a good name.

Is it the one in The Sealand Greyhound (or whatever it's called) that has closed?

Yes, the Greyhound Park on Sealand Road.

When salespeople try to sell me an extened warranty I usually say "So what your telling me is that this expensive product I'm buying probably won't last more than 12 months?"

That usually stumps them.

I did that once - I think we were buying a microwave - and spoke loudly enough for other shoppers to hear. The salesman shut up
