Title: My Pet Subject !
Post by: Alex on April 24, 2022, 09:49:36 AM
On Thursday the Premier Leage game between Burnley and Southampton was stopped in the 41st minute to allow two muslim players to break fast.   They have to perform this at a certain time apparently, but half time is normally at 45 minutes so what difference 4 minutes makes I don't know.  Just more pandering to for what is at the moment a minority.  IMO religion and politics shouldn't be a part of sport.
In recent weeks we've seen muslims gathering at famous London landmarks to ' break fast'  Royal Albert Hall steps was one venue they chose, outside Westminster Abbey was another and The Tower of London a third, are there no mosques in London where they can perform this ritual I ask myself ?
We Brits are so easy going, it will be our downfall.

A bit of forethought to start the game 5 minutes earlier would have solved that issue. It must have happened before surely?

No I've never read about it happening in public places before.  Only the call to prayer from London Bridge which I think was last year.

If they ever become more than 5% of the population, they might start getting their own way......

If their religion prevents them from participating normally in football then the obvious answer to me is that they should not be employed as footballers.

London Bridge..
All Staged/Planned ... They are letting us know how bloody important they think they are.. And we obviously agree with them.. by allowing them to dictate these events..
Is Speakers Corner still going on..?
I wonder if Christian Speakers are getting on their soap box. !!
Or has this been stopped.. should they offend..  :nooo:

why is it that a tiny minority, whether weird religions or sexual preferences or whatever, are being allowed to dictate to the great majority?

D'you know Mike, my life so far hasn't been affected by minority groups. I've been to the Islamic wedding of a colleague, enjoyed food shared at Ramadan, courtesy of another colleague, and visited a couple of mosques. I live in a very multi cultural county.

I've been disgusted by the behaviour of some Muslims, the grooming gangs in particular, but I'm a fan of the Chief Prosecutor who nailed some of them - he's also a Muslim, as was the consultant who finally diagnosed my OH, and saved his life.  I'm acquainted with a gay married couple, they are nice men who just quietly get on with their lives, whilst caring deeply for each other.

Of course the minority should never be allowed to dictate to the majority, but neither should we lump all people in a minority together.  The extremes are where the damage is done.  klondike touches on publicity, IMO the media have a lot to answer for!

^^^^^ Excellent post GrannyMac. I nmy experience equality is all most members of minorities want - and I support that 100%. As you say - the extremes are where the damage is done - on all sides.

If the silly sods want to starve for Allah it's up to them,  I am not interested in their stupid foreign religion, we have enough of our own the Church of England is the religion of this country of which the Queen is the head.  I am a non believer and think all religion is rubbish, especially the Arch Idiot of Canterbury, and not to be biased the bloody Pope in whose religion I was brainwashed as a child.  It's all about control so people will do as they are told in this life with the promise of better when they die.

And as for stopping a  football match, the biggest religion of them all,  to let the silly so and sos eat! well that is really taking the mick!!!!!!

I imagine we all have 'minority group' friends or colleagues. I have muslims in my family, also a dear friend who came originally from Jamaica, this doesn't stop me from seeing what is happening here in this country today.  My Jamaican friend feels exactly the same as I do when it comes to the expansion of Islam.

A relative was driven out of her house eventually after a mosque was built opposite her house.

If you live near a mosque, there's no point in ringing the police about noise, or cars blocking your driveway.  The Cheshire Police answer is "it's only for a few hours on a Friday"  well no it's not !  sometimes it's 2'oclock in the morning with car doors banging and people shouting, plus with their sense of entitlement they seem to think they have the right to park wherever they want.  Infuriating.

HMOs are pretty much the same except it's less people. Planning permission was granted for one a couple of doors away. Apart from the overflowing bins on public display there is no impact on me but they are driving my neighbour to distraction with doors constantly banging (fire doors on automatic closers) and parties till god only knows when. They are all students and seem to know those in another across the road. Students. All foreign but could be British born I suppose. The landlord has agreed not to renew their tenancy for the next academic year.

HMOs can be a nightmare, shared responsibility often means no one takes any and they end up like hovels. Parking around mosques is often a nightmare.  Hopefully none has been given planning permission recently without adequate parking in the proposals.  I live near a football ground, another parking nightmare.  Fortunately not every week!

This was the one over the road which I have complained about more than once.

This is the one I recently complained about.  I don't want it getting as bad as the other. The bin men won't take excess bags so they get left behind. The blue lidded bin in the garden isn't due until the following week by which time more will have built up and be left in bags. Apart from being an eyesore I imagine there is every chance that it will attract vermin.

Disgusting. The landlord has responsibility for making sure his/her tenants dispose of their rubbish responsibly.  Extra or larger bins are usually available, although there might be a cost involved.   HMOs generate a lot more income than single dwellings, and if the landlord is a) not  carrying out regular inspections, and b) not arranging for clear ups, I'd be getting on to the council before the vermin appear.

Horrible for the neighbour next door.

There is a warden here apparently. The council set a cap of 10% HMOs (3 or more tenants) within 50m of one. That one just scraped in but my neighbour thinks another unregistered one is in the next street within the 50m.

There was mention of a surge in foreign students entering the country this year on Farage with Nigeria being mentioned. My bet is that the two HMOs I mentioned are housing part of that surge.

Still better than a mosque though IMO. There is a church just down the road and the hall gets let out to all sorts. About the only ones not giving it much custom is probably CofE. A dieing religion (literally).

I am so, so pleased that none of the bigger houses near me take in (lodgers)..
It looks unsightly and what once was a beautiful dwelling becomes an eyesore..
It causes property prices to tumble..
I am happy to be (not posh) living in a (posh) area..

They aren't lodgers. The landlord (soddit done it again) doesn't live in them. There is a communal kitchen and bathroom and each room is a bedsit.

The houses here are big, old and not high value. Typically unmodernised ones get bought up cheap and converted. If you are lucky that conversion is into two flats which is not a problem but annoyingly such a house gets counted as two in the 90% that must not be HMOs as does the Vets because that had an upstairs flat which is unused.

A 3 bed house across the road from me was bought by a builder, made into 5 bedrooms with a loft conversion and let out straight away to students.  The students were really nice kids, never any trouble with them.
