Did Ukraine manage to hit a Russian cruiser with two missiles?

Yes, because its commander got lazy.

First rule of not wanting your ship to be promoted to a submarine: Don't move in a repeating pattern with your Enemy Anti-Missile Systems off!

The Russian cruiser "Moskva" had started to move in a repeating pattern in the Black sea guarding the southern coast of Ukraine listening in on radio traffic from the Ukrainian forces. Knowing that the Ukrainians had no subs or a usable fleet for the moment it had been lulled into a false sense of security.

Thinking they where undetected from the Ukrainian forces they let the guard down. But they where not undetected from the NATO surveillance. They tracked her good. Especially if she had her Early Anti-Missile Systems on. Which she didn't have. Because Ukraine couldn't track her or be a threat. NATO relayed this information to the Ukrainians who put a couple of anti-ship missiles near Odesa. Then they waited.

Once they saw that the ship did the same route as before and NATO could determine that the radar system was not on, off went the missiles.

Since they knew the location of the ship the missiles had been programmed not to activate their radar until the last seconds. Then it was to late for the Russian ship. Switching on those systems that tries to shoot down enemy missiles takes up to a minute to activate. In hostile waters they are always on. But not this time.

Most probably one of the missiles was a slamdunk and went straight into one of the ammunition storages.

The ship was badly damaged. The Russians say that they tried to tow her into port, but the storm and the fire aboard made her go belly up and down under.

So ends the story of the cruiser "Moskva".

Destroyed because of negligence.
