I'd listened to the earlier DCI Banks novels before but downloaded some new ones and have been going through them all again. I thought the earlier ones gave away some of Peter Robinson's (the author) character (a letcherous old boozer who had problems giving up fags as that is how Banks is portrayed) and the newer ones certainly peg him as a devout Remainer who resents the referendum result
Unusually I find the televised version of something considerably better than the original books which seem to be stories of pub crawls, troughing and letchery with a murder mystery as a minor part of the tale.
I have most of the Banks books on audio and I really enjoy them. If you want a real gritty detective series the go for the Logan McRae ones. It's set in Aberdeen, the author doesn't hold back and they are very enjoyable if you have a strong stomach.
Thanks Raven. I will look those up and see if they are in stock in the Emporium.
Stewart MacBride is the author, you need to read them in order, as well as the stories there's another story that runs through the whole lot of them and links them together.
These are some of the early books in the series.
I've found a potential download of the first 12

Whether ir will work or not I'm not sure. There are some individual ones that will but as you say many of these series need reading in sequence.
I have high hopes of that one as it has started to rock and roll and at a goodly lick.
It's a great series I'm sure you will enjoy it. There's some comedy in the series as well. That comes in the form of his boss Roberta Steele, the lesbian who is hilarious. Won't say any more. :lipsrsealed:
They all downloaded OK along with some short stories and a couple of other novels by Stuart MacBride. Thanks for the pointer. I'll give them a try once I've finished my last Banks which I'm half way through.
In the unlikely event that anybody else is looking for magnet links for audiobooks I use http://audiobookbay.nl/ rather than https://www.magnetdl.com/ for those.
To avoid ISP / Copyright problems I don't run any torrents myself but zoony used to without issue.
It's audiobookbay that I use, have done for years. I used to use demomoid it was really good but it got taken down.

I'm a fan! I've read most of them, love the characters.
I'm reading the latest Ian Rankin. John Rebus is his, now retired, cop. Set in Edinburgh as a bonus.

Along with his new partner, a wee dog he adopted. Brillo I think he got named.
I like the Malcom Fox stories too.

GM, Does this carry on from the TV series? I used to like that, I preferred John Hannah to Ken Stott although they were both good. I have never read the books though.
The TV series came after the books. I actually prefer Ken Stott, but neither he or John Hannah looks like the Rebus I imagined when I read the books. Tom Wilkinson, who played Gerald in the Full Monty is the nearest to how I pictured Rebus before I saw the TV shows. Of course he wouldn't sound right!
You're right Raven, the dog is Brillo.
Ken Stott is exactly how I saw Rebus, but then it's always been audio books for me and I think the voice makes a big difference to how you see a character.
I haven't seen much Rebus but recalled a Ken Stott episode or two so visited the Emporium and grabbed all I could find for my ever expanding boxset collection. I watched the first one mostly to evaluate the video quality as they are old and it was John Hannah not who I was expecting. I will watch them but right now they are on the back burner as I have so much stuff already in progress.
I've made a start on listening to the Logan McRae books. Finished the first and well into the second. Very entertaining. Thanks again for the pointer Raven.
That's good, I thought you would like them. :yahoo:
The Scots accent they are read in is easy on the ear but I suspect doesn't add to the authenticity for Scots as I doubt it is Aberdonian by a long chalk.
As I read the Logan McrRae books I can't help wondering if Stuart MacBride based Steel on a real person. For some reason in my mind's eye I see Anne Hegerty when reading of Steel. Doubtless Anne would be mortified.
More in line with the thread title I see that Stephen Tompkinson who played Banks is up before the break for GBH and claiming self defence.

It'll be an interesting case since the guy he hit didn't know what had happened until he came out a coma a few days after the assault.
The neighbour is a witness and from what I read it sounds like DCI Banks is in trouble.
I saw Stephen Tompkinson on the news yesterday. He's so thin! Stress related perhaps.
On the book topic, I've got the latest MacBride from the library, The Dead of Winter. Its a standalone, I've not started it yet, just finishing the latest Jack Reacher tale.
I have that on my phone but haven't listened to it yet - finishing off my Mcrae and Hegerty stories first
Is the Reacher story The Secret? I checked and found I was missing No Plan B as an audiobook but The Secret isn't in my normal audiobook emporium yet.
Found why I don't see it...

TBH I was finding that the Reacher books were becoming very sameish and still have some on my phone unread as yet.
No, its No Plan B. They have become sameish. I didn't know about The Secret. 👍🏽
Stephen Tompkinson not guilty of GBH

He sure as hell doesn't look well though.

must say I was quite shocked at his appearance - still, I suppose going through that sort of trauma hardly leaves one feeling chipper
He does look a 'bit rough' doesn't he !
Gaunt, I thought. Having to wait so long to have a case heard must be tough.
'Gaunt' outdoes "bit rough" every time GM :upvote:
Bit rough can pass by tomorrow. Looking like he does he could himself.
Add gaunt/a bit rough to the fact he doesn't seem to be ageing well.
he's not even 60 and looks about 80
