Fines for lorry drivers caught at the Channel ports with illegal immigrants hiding in their vehicles are being increased fivefold from 13 February.

Hauliers will be fined £10,000 per stowaway, up from £2,000.

Can someone explain how it's possible to fine drivers for bringing in illegals, but not RNLI boatmen  ?

Thank you for the days, the days you gave me

Even if these buggers do get in their lorries, if I were a driver I wouldn't fancy challenging them, you don't know who they are or what weapons they may be carrying, it's not fair to lay it all on the lorry drivers.

As for your point Alex, yes why not fine RNLI for bringing illegals in, that would put a stop to their taxi service.

Raven

No I wouldn't tackle them either, but I would refuse point blank to get behind the wheel and drive anywhere.

And that's a pass from me too.

After all we keep getting told they're not illegals when they're on a dinghy so why does a lorry make them illegal?

I've mentioned this exact point here several times already...

I suspect that the RNLI are losing money because of their involvement it this. They certainly won't be getting any from me.

Sorry Klondy, I can't remember what I've written on here, never mind you  :yahoo:   It does seem unfair that lorry drivers have to pay when RNLI  and Border Farce don't.

Raven

RNLI  and Border Farce. Should have a bright flashing light on their roof saying TAXI.  :waiting:

Wasn't a criticism - it was an agreement.

I agree, challenging them could be dangerous.  However, if I knew they were there the first thing I'd do, even before boarding the ferry, would be to pull up at the port in France (or wherever else) and inform the authorities what was going on and that I had been threatened by the traffickers.  Let them deal with it.

I completely agree about the RNLI and the Border Farce boats.  Their excuse is that they have been ordered by the government, or the appropriate part of the Civil Service, to take them onboard and bring them here.  In their place I would rescue them and drop them off within swimming distance of the French coast.
Let the Frogs complain, or even impound the boat, and inform the UK government of my actions.
