I'm not sure if they are "carefully set" or not. There were several with multiple choices of letter and I picked the wrong one too often. I did notice that one I solved later would have eliminated at least one of my wrong guesses. I knew I was buggered when my very first multi choice was the wrong one. I think the only ways to avoid this are luck or devoting a lot more time to the puzzle than I'm prepared to.
