Title: My Knobs too long..!
Post by: Scrumpy on February 23, 2022, 01:42:21 PM

Can someone advise please.. ?
I plan to paint bathroom cupboards.. and replace the knobs..
They have arrived but on checking, the screw needs shortening.. I know that I can buy a saw thingy to shorten the metal but have no idea what sort I need..
I seldom use this sort of thing so I wouldn't want to waste my money..
Could someone suggest a cheapy saw.. ? Thank you..

Scrumpy
How do you intend to hold the screws whilst you wield the saw?
Please don't say in your fingers (or anybody else's fingers)
Lacking a vice, simplest way is to take a substantial piece of wood, screw the screw into into it, leaving rather more protruding that you want, and use the hacksaw cut cut the screw off as near as flush to the surface of the wood as you can manage

When Michael, our son was deemed responsible enough. (Probably, three to four yrs old).
I made up a toolbox, using a margarine tub. With junior hacksaw, small tack hammer, small pliers, electrical screwdriver etc.
Another smaller box held a few nails and panel pins.
Another box, held some wood offcuts.

First thing he made was a 4" x 3" 'table', with all four legs different lengths!
47 years later, he hasn't improved much....  :hmm:

I'm assuming that the two 4-yr-olds only ever use a hand held hack saw to cut something that held securely in a vice, so in fact my powered version is actually safer as it requires no pressure to cut & doesn't slip.
