Title: Homemade gifts..
Post by: Scrumpy on February 28, 2022, 02:00:22 PM

At the moment I am putting together a gift for my daughter...It takes me a while but it is worth it..

I am constructing a sign post with arrows pointing in the direction of different places that are special to my daughter and her husband... France.. Modbury etc: showing the distance in miles..
I was advised to put a primmer on the (pointers) plus an undercoat.. Then a matt colour .. with lettering in gloss...
Any thoughts on this please... ? or ideas that would help..

What material are you using for the sign post  ?

A wooden fence post.. It will be treated already.. and untreated wood for pointers..

I'd go for grey for the matt colour Scrumpy.  Its very 'in', and it will show up whatever colour gloss you use for the names.  Sounds like a very thoughtful and unique gift.

Thank you so much for your comments.. I will use primer plus undercoat..
I will also use Grey for my matt colour.. It sounds fine and it is a natural colour..
crabbyob.. !! You are a charmer..x
I will try and put up a pic when it is all done..

i really do think its a great idea for a gift for someone who has travelled
i might do one for my Landlady in Goa, she gets guests from Scotland  [2090] me...lol... Russia, london, usa, Canada... it would look great in her garden, beside my orange tree i grew for a seed...lol

What a good idea crabbyob.. A sign post can look attractive  in a garden.. or near a front gate.. It's also a memory that you have visited her... Go for it..  [2090]

Because the direction & distances will be totally dependent on where the post is placed.

New York isn't the same distance from John O'Groats as it is from Lands End.

she will obviously check the distance from lands end, then add the distance from her house to Lands end...

You could put the pointers on hinges and include some spare paint...

How many of you could point to Modbury on a map without Googling it first?

Thank you crabbyob.. Paint is being delivered today.. Charcoal Grey for the pointers..
I can then put the place names in different colours.. Most colours go with grey..

Question.. Could I use Acrylic paint for the place names..would it stand up to the outside elements..?

Scrumpy, I use Acrylic paints when I do rock painting. I always wait untill they are dry then add a couple of coats of clear varnish over the paint. I have had no bother with leaving some outside though I do put them in the greenhouse over the winter months.

Thank you Raven.. Because the sign is out in all weathers I don't think acrylic wording will work..

Might by better with gloss then, or hammerite outside paint. I paint my benches with it every couple of years.
