Title: What have you been watching...
Post by: zoony on April 30, 2022, 05:04:49 PM
Been watching a lot of old police stuff like Midsomer, Endeavour, Lewis, Vera and Morse. Have a great documentary for a bit later called Fire In Babylon. The story of Clive Lloyd and Windies cricket in the 70s/80s when they were invincible. (almost. )

Tonight I'll watch 'Finch', Tom Hanks' new film. Post-apocalyptic tale of one man and his dog. And his robot..

Must get that. I've just finished listening to a Stephen King audiobook and was considering trying The Dark Tower next but never got into it last time I tried it years ago so decided to start watching the 2017 film version first. I'll grab Finch from the emporium and watch that after. Maybe. If I don't nod off although that's unlikely in a film of a King book.

I tried The Dark Tower a while ago but didn't like it much. Bit tedious, I remember.. Just watched Piers Morgan Uncensored with Donald Trump which I got from the Emporium's shelves earlier..One thing I'll give those people, it was a good chuckle.
I've taken to reading Lee Childs' Reacher books recently. Very enjoyable too.

i thought Dark Tower was OK. It didn't bear much if any resemblance to what I recall of the book though. Will be giving Finch a whirl in a mo. I only read on a Kindle when I go to bed. It's audiobooks for me. I pay the price if I nod off though as then losing your place really means losing your place.

read all the Reacher books ( a new one out in a few months) and I think you will see from the written word why I was scornful of casting Tom Cruise in the role

Finch was an odd tale. Enjoyable but odd as are many Tom Hanks films.

Getting 1-24 of the Reacher audiobooks courtesty of https://w41.torlook.info/ rather than Zoony's emporium as that came up with little

Few actors can carry a film alone as well as TH and I very much enjoyed 'Finch', at least the first two thirds, before it drowned in a sea of it's own schlock and sentimentality..Blasted Americans just can't help themselves.
Title: Re: What have you been watching...
Post by: klondike on May 03, 2022, 12:43:37 PM
The plot point was pretty much given away very early on I thought and as you say sentimental schlock plastered on quite thick but still not a bad watch.

Got book 25 of Reacher too. I'll probably end up hating them . Started on another King book and will try the first Reacher once that is done.

I watched the documentary rather than the drama and enjoyed it very much. Great story and the research was brilliant and beautifully detailed. Rather than put me off I'm looking forward to seeing the film.

I'm pretty sure that the 10s of millions of Cruise fans, who'll buy the tickets to his films, are more important to the producers than him being a short-arse.

In the first book the witness statement pointing the finger at Reacher as a likely killer would need a bit of alteration from a big tall blonde haired bloke. On hearing that and remembering Mike's earlier complaints I was grinning away to myself.

I found an old external drive thing at the back of my desk last time I was down in Perth, just got around to seeing what's on it. I was delighted to find 50 episodes of a comedy series I used to enjoy with my daughter. "The Ghost and Mrs Muir" Dunc had never heard of it but is really enjoying watching it now, and I'm loving seeing them all again.

I'm still playing spot the white man in Hugh's recommended "The Rising". At least half the main characters seem to be mixed race. Made by Sky which may explain that.

Im sure I remember The Ghost And Mrs Muir as a one-off film with (I think) the lovely Greer Garson starring.

It came out first in a B/W film late 40s early 50s, around then. Then a lot later on a series was made about it.

I still watch Corrie (there isn't much else on) and I wonder if there are new directors.  The actors are doing unnatural poses and it looks to me as though they are being told how to stand and move.

Yes I watched that. Pretty unbelievable that he ever got away with it to start with.

Watched another 3 part crime docudrama. Quite old I think as I'd watched it before. I started on Yellowstone but it didn't grab me so  I gave "Appropriate Adult" another spin.  Now the Wests  :nooo: :nooo:

Only ever watched Crossroads and Corrie. Crossroads went off the air and I stopped watching Corrie over ten years ago. Went on holiday and didn't see it for a couple of weeks, realised I didn't even miss it, so just stopped watching.

Finally a decent release and not TS more like  Anyway that heads up sorts out tonight's viewing so thanks.

Last night I watched a 3 part docudrama I thought I'd bin out before the end. I'd been putting off watching it. It was late but too early for bed so I gave it a go expecting to only watch one part and get an early night. Oddly I got into it and ended up with a later night than I intended - Quiz - the story of the court case after a £1m Who Wants to be a Millionaire winner was accused and convicted of cheating. I must say based on the defence as presented in the program I couldn't have convicted.

Well I can remember the facts or at least what I read of them and I expect the film will stick to those. What I can't figure out is how they have made a two hour film of it. I do know that it was a very important bit of disinformation and made a big contribution to defeating the Nazis.

I liked Killing Eve. Might download them for a rewatch.

I didn't see Operation Mincemeat in the emporium and deleted my BBC account when I deleted the DD but luckily I found it on TorLook. I'll give that a whizz first to refresh my memory as I don't doubt that there will be detail I've forgotten. Film will probably end up being tomorrow as I don't want to spend all evening on it.

Looks like Killing Eve went to 4 seasons. I may not have seen them all.

All my viewing comes from Amazon Prime, free streaming services or downloads found in Zoony's Video Emporium or elsewhere on the occasions that lets me down.

I now have 4 seasons of Killing Eve downloaded. I do recall that it started getting ever more unbelievable so there is a chance I gave up on it before the end - a fate that many long runners meet. I have just started downloading Bosch Legacy though (possibly all now) and could watch more of Justified if more were ever produced. I'm not usually overly fond of American police stuff but those two I did like.

I'm afraid that my tolerance level was even lower than yours. I may have hung in a little longer hoping things would improve had you not already said that you baled out early. As it is I don't think I made 10 minutes. Annoying tuneless dirges, slowly delivered grunts of stilted dialog. Not for me. Perhaps I have missed a masterpiece. More likley I haven't wasted a couple of hours though.

Title: Re: What have you been watching...
Post by: klondike on May 17, 2022, 08:32:25 AM
Seems we agree on what we don't like at least

I usually reckon on an IMDB rating of 7 or more suggest worth a look but I have enjoyed some trashy ones with quite low scores. If that 7.6 starts to decline as we go on then it would suggest some fiddling for sure.

I see it is at 7.5 now and the first reviews in this link were mostly way down on even that when I checked just now.
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt11138512/reviews/?ref_=tt_ql_urv

I never got as far as any plot as the annoying soundtrack and characters script delivery killed it for me. Maybe if I'd spent £20 on a cinema visit I'd have hung on longer.

I have started watching Outer Range as was mentioned earlier. Just 2 episodes so far. It does seem to be a bit slow going but I will persevere. When I get to the big reveal at the end I'll be disappointed I expect although there are already big hints so maybe the reveal will come early.

Anyway in conjunction with that I turned to an old set of short black comedies Inside No 9 which I have seen before. I still like them and on checking see that Season 7 is currently showing. It used to be BBC but it looks like it may be on Sky now. Naturally it is available from Zoony's Video Emporium to all capable of following the simple guide I wrote although it may be necessary to use the alternate site I also documented (Torlook) if your ISP has blocked Magnet.

Last night I watched a documentary 'Britain's Strictest School', about the Michaela Free school in Wembley.  No disruption in class, teachers are properly in charge, and the children are encouraged to take personal responsibility, work hard, and be kind. They were all so smartly dressed and well mannered.

Not the usual programme discussed here, but I found it really interesting.

Watched the end of Outer Range last night. Not impressed at all. That's 8 hours of my life I'll never get back.

Downloaded season 24 of Silent Witness and season 25 now on the list.

I've started to watch Night Sky on Prime.  The lead role is played by Sissy Spacek with J K Simmons playing her husband.  It's intriguing

Hadn't noticed it but I like both of 'em. 1st season downloading as we speak.  :upvote:

Silent Witness was back last night on BBC1, it had the orignal Amanda Burton as Sam Ryan back again. It's on again tonight at 9PM.

This is more my style, thought it was a two parter but it is carrying on again next week.

Anyone seen the new Long Lost Family about foundlings, quite heartbreaking.  One poor girl was found as a baby in hospital loo,  they put her DNA on Databases and found her full sister.  The sister had put her DNA up to find her birth family as she was also dumped in a hospital loo by the same parents.  At least the two girls have found each other even if they haven't found out who they are.

Watched 'The Batman'.. I've seen a lot of Batman films over the years and this was the dullest and most boring yet. Far too broody, humourless and dark, in more senses than one, for me. 2/10

Had a break from films and series recently but recently I started watching Fantastic Beasts the Secrets of Dumbledore and gave upon it. I gave upon Northmen too so that's two 2022 films I junked. Started on Bosch Legacy and have been enjoying that.

I have a big backlog of stuff I ought to watch including rewatching Last Kingdom from the start as when I started to watch the new season I found I had forgotten who most of the characters were so need to recap.

I'm downloading the new Silent Witness season but may start with season 1 which means that lot will likely last me to Christmas,

That rings a bell Raven but I'm not keen on horror.. All that suspense bores me.
Came across a tv series from the 80's called 'Chancer'. It stars a very young Gerard Butler and is the most God-awful piece of crape I've ever watched! Makes Crossroads look brilliant but it is, unintentionally, very funny.   If you've missed any 80's cliches, language and fashion(!), you'll find them here.. Otherwise, The Offer, about the making of The Godfather, which is brilliant..Gaslit, also excellent

I'm watching Bosch the Legacy too klondike, the last episode 10 was on May 27th, now we have to wait until 2023 for series 2 to appear.
It's become my favourite cop show  :yay:
The Beauty Queen of Jerusalem is quite a change from Bosch, but I'm enjoying that too - apart from constant skipping from 1920 to 1938

I watched a film called Honour on Prime, I'd like to say it was an eye opener but it wasn't, I sort of knew about honour killings.  What did surprise me was the attitude of a family member a policeman in fact, towards his sister a Pakistani/British woman, who dared to date an Indian/British man. Quite sad.

I don't think there is a great deal of love lost between Indians and Pakistanis regardless of any question of honour.

Not watching anything much on TV, it's such a load of rubbish.  The exception being Long Lost Family with the poor foundlings, and the woman swapped at birth, when a mistake was made in the middle of an air raid.  Also Stacey Dooly DNA Secrets, find this a facinating subject.

Fairly commonplace in the Burnley / Blackburn areas in the late 1980's early 1990's.

There was a layby, up on the moors, that bore the scorchmarks of a few gallons of 4 star for a number of years.

Asian families hired bounty hunters to track down a daughter,  who'd run away with a non-Asian man, usually white, in order for the honour killing to be facilitated & Asian police officers were complicit in helping the bounty hunters to trace the whereabouts of the girls.

Finally started rewatching The Last Kingdom so I can watch the latest series without constantly wondering who everybody is. I'd forgotten how good it is. Still good on a second viewing despite knowing in advance quite a bit of what is to come.

I'll give the audiobooks another whirl once I've finished the TV series. They have had quite a few outings already and from well before the TV series was made. The disadvantage of audiobooks compared to Kindle or real books which I only rarely read these days is that if you nod off it's the devil's own job to find your place again. When you've already heard them a few times you don't need to bother....

I may even give the Sharpe books and TV another outing from the same author.

From memory (possibly a false one and certainly a poor one) knives figured more prominently in the second. I don't think I'll be seeking out the later remakes.

From what I've seen of 2021/2022 films I may well be sticking to TV series and classic films all of which I have seen before but with my memory will certainly stand a return visit. I have hard drives full of them. Given the amount of time I spend in front of a TV there could easily be enough to outlast me.

Ah I think it was because I found it using the mic - it is on Roku too and it showed me that rather than  the free Prime offering even though I was in Prime when I asked for it. It doesn't matter as Zoony's stocks everything in HD anyway.

Picked up a Metro on the bus yesterday and saw an advert for something on Sky which I've downloaded and will be watching.

Midwich Cuckoos. This was a book by a science fiction author I enjoyed from my early teens on - John Wyndham. There have been countless adaptations of his stories for the screen with the one probably best known being Day of the Triffids. Keeley Hawes is in it but I don't know if she has a leading role or was put in as a well known name in a bit part. It's a 7 parter and I have no idea how quickly I'll watch it but if it's a stinker I'll update this soon enough as I'm about to give part 1 a go.

Looks promising after a slowish start where a fairly big cast made a showing.

Have you noticed they have rewritten history? Guy Gibson's dog is now Trigger, not Nigger which was the dog's name. The callsign for one of the dams being burst was also Nigger changed to Trigger.  I know this if an offensive word (although black people do not seem to mind calling each other by it) but it is history it happened, and you can't change the past however distasteful you might find it.

Yes Jacqueline I did notice and thought I was not hearing right. Last time I saw that film the dog was called Nigger and it was very clear.

Quote from: Jacqueline on October 05, 2022, 12:06:56 PMHave you noticed they have rewritten history? Guy Gibson's dog is now Trigger, not Nigger which was the dog's name. The callsign for one of the dams being burst was also Nigger changed to Trigger.  I know this if an offensive word (although black people do not seem to mind calling each other by it) but it is history it happened, and you can't change the past however distasteful you might find it.
You say Trigger.. I say Nigger...Trigger.. Nigger.. Nigger... Trigger.. !!!!

I love Detective books n films, Basil Rathbone as Sherlock was good, though I didn't start watching him untill the Freeview Channel "Talking Pictures" . I was trawling through YouTube earlier and came across a Sherlock I hadn't seen before with Basil Rathbone. It was called "The House of Fear" about a lonely old house high up on the cliffs, on the West Coast of Scotland. Fair enjoyed it. 👍👍😊😊

watched a film last night 'The Net'. Story is of a corporation which has developed a super-duper computer security programme and have persuaded lots of elements of the US government to use it- but it isn't what it seems - it has a back door enabling the corporation's people to get up to all sorts of mischief. Sandra Bullock plays a computer analyst trying (and eventually succeeding) in working out what is going on, but in the process her entire life is attacked - her house is sold whilst she is on holiday, she finds all official records of her have been changed, etc.
The film was released in 1995 and what really intrigued me was to be reminded what cutting edge technology was back then. Computers using 3.5" floppies, mobile phones with retractable ariels, cars that needed a key to open the door and start the engine..
Then it dawned - 1995 seems no time at all ago - but it is over a quarter of a century!

Sounds interesting Mike.

We watched the first episode of The Elon Musk Story. I didn't know much about him, apart from he is the richest person on earth! Or so I believe.  He's quite an odd character, but what a work ethic.  Two more episodes.

Some of us still have cars that need a key to open the door, we's not all loaded & posh. Lol

It's common practice for a computer programme creator to have a 'back door' into the programme.

At the start of the 1990s I wrote a database so that our region's investigation records could be computerised & all the statistics produced at the press of a key instead of taking two days manually.

I incorporated security features which prevented the date that a record was entered from being changed, as there was a time limit after which a person could not be prosecuted.

However, if I'd had a case that had dragged on too long I could have got in through the 'back door', undetected by the programme, delete the record & then re-enter it at a later date & the prosecution would have gone ahead.

Did I ever do it?

That's for me to know & someone else to prove.

just been thinking. The most recent car that didn't need a key in the ignition to start the engine was our Honda CR-V - 2013-2015 - and the most recent to open the doors on a fob must have been the Astra about 2000

I had a Ford back in the 70s that didn't. You could start it with a screwdriver. On one occasion we were house viewing with an estate agent and I locked the keys in. I asked if I could borrow his key. He was gobsmacked when I opened my door with it.

Fords back then were notorious. We were having a quiet drink after playing cricket (we won!) when one of the guys realised that he had locked his keys in his car. 'No worry' someone said. He took out a small penknife with a blade about two inches long and quarter of an inch wide and proceeded to demonstrate that he could use it to unlock not just the car in question but also several other Fords, including my 1967 Cortina Mk II
Bought myself a Krooklock the next day!

They are usually hacksaw proof. Unfortunately steering wheels aren't.

https://www.motorbiscuit.com/steering-wheel-locks-prevent-car-theft/

Steering wheel locks can be defeated
The unfortunate truth is that steering wheel locks, like The Club, can be defeated quite easily. There have been many cases where professional thieves have stolen cars equipped with a steering wheel lock by simply cutting a portion of the steering wheel to remove the device or by drilling or cutting the device itself to disable it.

very true - but they dissuade the casual thief not carrying a hacksaw and the time and place to use it
Title: Re: What have you been watching...

A casual thief won't have the kit needed to start a modern car and a steering lock won't stop anything left inside being stolen. I think a good one that surrounds the wheel may be good on an old or classic car but I don't see much point with modern cars.

It is a bit trickier depending on ISP now as magnetdl got put on the blocklist of some ISPs. That's easy enough to get around by using free VPNs but easier still to use the other source of magnet links I mentioned further on - torlook. - https://letschat.club/index.php?topic=664.msg11922#msg11922

Zoony didn't like using that and used a paid for VPN instead. I don't actually run the torrents myself as I use https://real-debrid.com/ to run them for me (requires a cheap subscription) as that saves time and removes even the slight risk of being chased for doing hookey downloading.

Using downloads makes BBC stuff available without using the BBC iplayer and there are never adverts in any of them. I only use catchup for GBNews.

I assume that's what crabby had. I don't know anything about them but crabby liked his.

I have put Kodi on Firesticks and they worked well at first but then the streams got blocked and the thing needed updating. I would hope that what you are looking at would be better.

I have been downloading stuff for years but avoided torrents. Then all the putlocker sites and forums giving the URLs to their content got closed. I was using realdebrid already as it gave high speed access to the putlockers so switched over to having it run the torrents. Most of the time it already has and you get an immediate download. That suited me so I never investigated streaming boxes.

Old begets old or so it seems. I was watching an old Inside Number 9 and remembered an actress in it was in Spooks. Alongside Emilia Fox from the later silent Witnesses as it happened. As Spooks is so old I assumed a visit to the Emporium may well draw a blank but there it was - 10 seasons worth. That will replace the old Inspector Morse's which I have just finished. Perhaps I'll couple them with the Silent Witnesses which I haven't got around to yet.

Well I'm still not watching the Silent Witnesses. I was sidetracked by some better quality Midsomer Murders at the Emporium and have been watching those. Considering the age they aren't bad quality at all and much better than the ones I had. Obviously I've already seen them all but senility means I can't recall whodunnit. What is odd is that I do recall the main characters in each episode. Not something for avid crime watchers as it is all so ott but very enjoyable.

watched a film called 'Interceptor'. Totally incredible story of terrorist stealing Russian missiles and targeting them on the USA only to be thwarted by a female US army captain. Light hearted entertainment, but even more incredible than the plot were the heroics of the female officer, throwing blokes twice her size all over the place and being punched repeatedly in the face, again by someone twice her size, and showing as a result just a small trickle of blood from the corner of her mouth.
Still, it passed the time

I thought I'd seen this mentioned here but if it was I can't find the post. It's on Nexflix but was in the Emporium  of couse so I'll give it a try. Ancient Apocalypse. Looks like it will be a rework / alternate interpretation of the von Daniken Chariots of the Gods ideas. I doubt I'll see anything to persuade me of past marvels but I do like to see the clever stuff our predecessors produced before recorded history.

I was going to post an IMDB link but fumble fingers in the process lead to me finding this story which was probably where I saw it mentioned...

https://www.express.co.uk/showbiz/tv-radio/1701596/Netflix-Ancient-Apocalypse-dangerous-reaction

Netflix's Ancient Apocalypse branded 'most dangerous show' as viewers divided
The new docuseries claims to reveal "something incredibly important in our own past" which has allegedly been forgotten from history books.

I am binge watching 'Vikings – Valhalla' and enjoying it. Some understandable liberties have been taken – for instance, the warships depicted are far too small to represent genuine Viking longships – the smallest warships used at the time of the series were the snekkja with a minimum of 20 oars – 10 per side and the drakkar had a minimum of 30.  Some were a good bit bigger, and a double oared drakkar might easily have 60+ warriors aboard her. Still, to try for genuine reproductions would surely have been ruinously expensive.
I am intrigued by one historical anomaly. Sven Forkbeard is depicted as still being around – in fact, he died in 1014. In 1013 he had deposed Aethelred   (don't know how to type a diphthong)  who fled abroad only to return and reclaim the throne on Sven's death, only to die himself in 1016, to be succeeded, briefly, by Edmund who died later the same year. Edmund's death is a mystery – apparently various chroniclers, all writing long after the event, variously claim him to have been assassinated, died of wounds received in battle, or from some unspecified disease.
I was fascinated by Stuart's comment when it was pointed out that there was no evidence that some of the characters he had meeting had ever done so. He replied that there was no evidence that they hadn't, and that they could have done. I like it!
Some fascinating characters – Lief Erikson, for instance, according to the sagas landed in North America – Vinland – 500 years before Columbus. I don't believe that there is any evidence that he ever had a sister – but to borrow from Stuart – no evidence that he didn't!

I watched the first episode and couldn't get overly excited but I will try some more.

The far too small boats is a carry through from the original Vikings seasons and obviously done for cost reasons as they are real hand built boats. I noticed that in the episode I watched there were some CGI generated longships and thought they may have upped their game until the small ones made an appearance again.

I am not familiar with the history so errors in that don't bother me at all.

For many years now I have set my 5GHz WiFi to Valhalla and the 2.4GHz is Asgard. I probably picked them when I started watching the original Vikings which I thoroughly enjoyed for the first few seasons.

I have given up on Vikings after 6 episodes out of about 50? Each episode is just much of a muchness with no real plot - just hacking folk with swords and axes

There was a deliberate 6 year delay to let Ryan grow up, and want to meet TLR.

Perhaps no new cars 🚘 is meant to signify Yorkshire people as canny with their money?  😉

Well that explains the gap but most shows would just us a different actor.

The cars all have pretty old plates though which is odd.

I watched Elona Holmes 2 on Netflix last night, supposed to be Sherlocks Holmes sister.  Set in Victorian London,  Match factory girls = huge number of blacks, chinese etc.  Inspector Listrade = black, Dr John Watson = black,   Moriarty = black woman.  Represents todays London but no way Victorian London.  My grandma a Londoner born in 1881, was quite surprised when seeing black bus conductors as she had rarely seen a black person before.

I have three months Netflix for free, will cancel next month, no way will I pay for it, so many foreign dubbed films on there, anything halfway decent I have seen already. The only films any good are on Talking Pictures the old 50's ones, very few decent films that interest me made these days.

I couldn't live without Netflix    As I don't have a telly licence I watch lots of stuff including the 'foreign dubbed' films, some great storylines, particularly from Sweden and Norway.   Before you give it up have a look at Women At War set in France in WW I , tells the story of 4 French women but yes it's dubbed.

There is so much choice on Netflix.. Amazon.. Disney..
As well as iPlayer ...  I have these should I need them..
My family add me on their list ....
I seldom use them.. but it is good to know that they are available..
I could never watch anything with sub-titles.. My reading is not quick enough.. By the time I have read the sub-titles the scene is over..

When I began reading your post, and having been a Sherlock Holmes fan, I couldn't wait to find that film on Netflix.
Then I read further.
In all honesty, it annoys me how recent programmes and films overdo the business of 'equality', whilst ignoring historical facts.  I have seen so many recently, and it annoys me because it reminds me how many examples there are these days of putting non-white before white when it comes to employment - the police, for example - completely contrary to the actual proportions in real life.

Scrumps you might like Women At War on Netflix it's not sub titles, it's dubbed into English

Why set something in a Victorian London that doesn't represent the times? I am a bit of an historical accuracy freak, I remember pointing out Laura Ashley wall paper in a Dickins film, I scan the sets to see if they are accurate to the times, you'd be surprised how many blunders they make.  So these black people in places they would never have been really annoy me, if you want modern day black London have the films set in these times.

totally agree - I'm the same. Veronica used to utter long suffering sighs when I moaned about firearms, especially, out of time and place - Colt 1873 SAAs appearing years before their time, Baker and Caine brandishing Mk VI Webleys, which didn't appear until 1915 in Zulu set it 1879, etc.

I rely on subtitles on a lot of programmes because I have rubbish hearing, and sometimes the dialogue isn't clear, or even worse, there's music in the background.  Don't go deaf Scrumpy!

I find them very distracting. Even the Korean ones (basically a load of squiggles) which sometimes appear hard coded on early release stuff downloaded courtesy of Zoony's Video Emporium. I wait and get something without them a bit later.

I chose hearing aids instead...

Finished Happy Valley season 3 and enjoyed it. Can't wait til next year when my mate Al Zheimer assures me it will be all sparkly fresh for me once again.

I read that there is to be a season 3 of Fawlty Towers. The first two seasons were so good I'm not sure it will be possible to bring it off. I'm guessing that maybe John Cleese has divorced yet again and is a little short on the readies.

I've tried several different types of hearing aids over the years - sadly, for me, none work.

Have you tried the NHS route? My mother paid thousands for an aid that didn't work. We found out after inheriting the house that the phone line was faulty which explained one of her problems.

I mostly only wear them for listening to TV. The difference is immediately obvious. The stuff stays on the shelves for one thing.

I've had three NHS sets over the years plus £3,200 for a private set - no good, but I got my money back. I just don't understand why aids just don't work for me. The NHS clinic tried all sorts of 'tuning' but all it did was accentuate the high frequencies to the point that the noise of dropping a piece of cutlery just about sent me into orbit and human speech was still poor. What I further don't understand is that some TV comes through loud and clear - on YouTube some clips are totally hopeless, others are clear - but it's all human voice. It makes being in a group situation with several folk all talking really miserable. Having other folk wearing a mask made it even worse.

Having other folk wearing a mask made it even worse.

I suspect that's more unconscious lip reading than muffling.

I have no problems with presenters or documentaries it's just films and series. It may be background music I suppose. The aids don't fix everything but help a lot. They do have a fault which I'll ask about when I go back - I think the RH one is clipping at high volumes as I get an annoying clicking. Oddly enough this is most evident when I'm taking a leak.

I can't tolerate subtitle though. I'd rather give upon something than endure them.

I struggle a bit in group settings with a noisy background too, or sometimes when I'm not aware that someone's speaking to me.

Face-to-face, TV etc & I'm fine.

I had a meeting the other day (I'm involved in a housing thing) on Teams.  Sat in my dining room, using my iPad, I could see and hear everyone clearly. In a real meeting, I can't hear people behind me very well, and people tend to talk over each other.  On Teams you signal you want to speak, it works well for me.

I watched it, few surprises as it had all been in the press.  Still appalling that the police and local authorities were not held to account. Goes without saying that the men, mainly Pakistani, are disgusting, as are many in their ethnic communities for supporting them.

Can you imagine if the boot was on the other foot and it was white men abusing black and asian girls on this scale? there would be a national task force to to sort it, on the news daily, nobody would be scared to say these are white male rapists, there would be hundreds of prosecutions and real support and compensation  for the victims. But these are just white girls, proves what those in power think of us.

The problem being that their lot don't see it as disgusting or anything wrong with it.

I suppose it should come as no surprise when they worship a paedo who, history states, married a 6-yr-old & shagged her when she was 9.

Exactly, all according to their religion, having sex, raping and abusing non muslim women is OK, mahomed and his lot did it all the time, so they are only following his example, it's not adultery unless it's a muslim woman they are having sex with and there is no lower age for having sex with young girls so they don't see it as wrong.

Why didn't those who invited these people here in the first place look into their backgrounds and beliefs to see if they were compatible with the British way of life before inflicting them upon us? they have a lot to answer for. And quite honestly what use are kebab shop and taxi driver people to us?

I see the latest and maybe last season of Vera has just finished so I've grabbed that and will watch one later. The final season of Endeavour is following it so that's one I'll get when it finishes too.

I seem to spend far too much time watching police stuff and certainly far too much on old stuff. Oddly the newest stuff I'm currently on is also based on the oldest period - Vikings Valhalla - I wasn't overly impressed with the first couple but have warmed to it now and will complete Season 1 then go on to Season 2.

I enjoyed Vikings Valhalla, but not the original Vikings which seemed to have no real plot, just 60 minutes of chopping up Saxons per episode, so I gave up after about 6 episodes

I'm still watching old stuff. Been rewatching Downton Abbey. Not the sort of thing I'd expect to like but I find if compelling. A bit of Season 5 then season 6 and the film to go. I mix in a variety of old detective shows between episodes. Currently Banks, Lewis and Frost but I also grabbed Rebus and Taggart and have exhausted lots of others. When I downloaded Downton I got Upstairs Downstairs too but that is so old I may get fed up with the video quality unless the storylines are really good. I did watch it way back.
